In 1505, Sri Lanka was first colonized by the Portuguese, followed by the Dutch who later took control. The British occupied the island from the 1780s until 1948, during which time they referred to it as Ceylon—a name that endures as a renowned brand in the tea trade. In 1972, the country officially adopted the name Sri Lanka.

After almost 150 years of British domination, Sri Lanka gained independence in 1948, and became a member of the UN a year later. Sri Lanka is a nation in the Commonwealth.
