Mary Spencer, a 65-year-old widow and former college lecturer from the UK, found herself yearning for a change after retiring in 2022. The routine life she had known in London no longer appealed to her, and with newfound financial freedom, Mary felt it was time to embrace a fresh start.
The harsh winters of the UK made her long for warmth and a life far removed from the monotony she had grown accustomed to. As she explored her options online, the enchanting island of Sri Lanka caught her eye as an ideal safe retirement haven. With a friend's help, Mary embarked on a new adventure, booking an extended winter escape holiday for 50 plus in the picturesque town of Galle Sri Lanka through a trusted tour company in the UK.
After her first extended holiday stay in Galle, Sri Lanka, from November 2022 to March 2023, Mary found herself so captivated by the experience, that she returned in November 2023 to make Sri Lanka her permanent home. Here is Mary’s story, told in her own words.
My story is quite simple: after retiring in London, I found myself overwhelmed by loneliness and the monotony of daily life. I knew I needed a change, something that would bring new energy to my retirement years. In my quest to change, I discovered Galle Sri Lanka.
The moment I arrived in Galle, Sri Lanka, I instantly felt a deep sense of belonging. The warmth and hospitality of the people made this new environment feel like home. I quickly established a support network that ensured I never felt insecure or alone in this beautiful island country.
My main point of contact was Ajith, who took care of everything for me. From the very first day, I felt connected to this wonderful place, forging friendships with both locals and fellow expatriates from the UK and Germany.
In my private villa, every day in Sri Lanka feels like a new adventure, free from the constraints of routine. I’ve embraced a life of spontaneity, spending my time learning about the rich culture and warm-hearted people of this beautiful island. Without much planning, I dive into activities that spark my interest, whether it’s exploring with friends or indulging in my passions whenever and however I please.
Ajith, my reliable friend, continues to help with the things I can’t quite manage on my own, but overall, I’ve crafted a carefree lifestyle that suits me perfectly. Sometimes, I can’t tell if I’m 65 or 16, as I feel so invigorated by this exciting new chapter of my life.
Beyond the fun and relaxation, I maintain a regular fitness routine that includes yoga, Ayurveda wellness treatments, and beauty care. Every Saturday morning, I offer free English lessons to underprivileged children and youth at a village temple—a small way of giving back that brings me immense joy.
I could go on about the countless ways this new life in Sri Lanka has transformed me into the person I’ve always wanted to be. The simple pleasures of fresh air, a pressure-free existence, and the absence of rigid routines have brought a profound sense of meaning to my days.
So much so that I moved to Galle Sri Lanka in November 2023 and I’ve applied for permanent residency, as I can’t imagine leaving this incredible island and its wonderfully welcoming people. Sri Lanka has become my true home, and I’m thrilled to have discovered this beautiful new life in Galle, Sri Lanka.
